Sabrina Carpenter's new era is officially on the way and it appears to be just as unapologetic as her last.
On Friday (June 6), Carpenter dropped her new single "Manchild," the first follow-up to her Grammy winning sixth studio album Short n' Sweet and a country-influenced track that cheekily calls out the "useless" men who won't "let an innocent woman be."
She sings in the chorus, "Never heard of self-care/ Half your brain just ain't there. Manchild, why you always come a-running, taking all my loving from me?" After noting that she likes her men "all incompetent," she later declares, "I swear they choose me, I'm not choosing them."
Carpenter also dropped an accompanying music video that captures all the comical pitfalls of hitchhiking and trying to catch a ride with men passing by. However, every new man brings with him an exasperating challenge for the singer, from abandoning her with an armed robber to riding on an armchair fashioned into a vehicle.
In honor of her new single, Carpenter shared a post on Instagram explaining how she wrote "Manchild" with Jack Antonoff and Amy Allen on a day that "ended up being the best random tuesday of my life."
"Not only was it so fun to write, but this song became to me something I can look back on that will score the mental montage to the very confusing and fun young adult years of my life," she said. "It sounds like the song embodiment of a loving eye roll and it feels like a never ending road trip in the summer ! hence why I wanted to give it to you now — so you can stick your head out the car window and scream it all summer long!"
The "Please Please Please" hitmaker also expressed gratitude toward fans for their support as she introduced her new era and hilariously thanked men "for testing me" and serving as inspiration for the single.
