An illegal migrant accused of handwriting a letter threatening to assassinate President Donald Trump may have actually been set up, law enforcement sources with knowledge of the situation confirmed to the New York Post on Friday (May 30).
Ramon Morales Reyes, 54, a Mexican national, was detained in Wisconsin after a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer received the letter on May 21, however, the sources claimed that handwriting analysis shows that Reyes didn't actually pen the letter himself. Authorities are now investigating whether the person who actually wrote the letter is already incarcerated and set Reyes up because he is an apparent witness in their criminal case, the sources said.
“The investigation into the threat is ongoing,” a senior DHS official told the New York Post. “Over the course of the investigation, this individual was determined to be in the country illegally and that he had a criminal record. He will remain in custody.”
The letter that led to Reyes' arrest included a threat to "shoot your precious president in [his] head" at one of his rallies.
“We are tired of this president messing with us Mexicans – we have done more for this country than you white people,” the letter states. “You have been deporting my family and I think it is time Donald J. Trump gets what he has coming to him.”
“I will see him at one of his big rallies," the letter concluded.
Reyes was arrested one day after the letter was received by the ICE agent, according to the Department of Homeland Security. Trump was previously targeted in two assassination attempts during his 2024 campaign, which included gunshots being fired by Thomas Matthew Crooks, who was killed seconds later, during his Butler, Pennsylvania, rally last July and later being targeted by Ryan Wesley Routh, who was arrested near the president's private golf course in Florida last September.
